About the Internship opportunity

The Internship is the foundation programme of the NIHR Integrated Clinical and Practitioner Academic career development pathway, please see: https://www.nihr.ac.uk/explore-nihr/academy-programmes/hee-nihr-integrated-clinical-and-practitioner-academic-programme.htm .

The 2024/25 internship cohort is open to an expanded group of registered health professionals (excluding doctors and dentists) including nurses, midwives, allied health professions, pharmacists and healthcare scientists. Applicants will be working in the NHS England North East and Yorkshire region, normally within an NHS organisation (or an organisation providing NHS services), however we are keen to widen this to registered professionals employed in other settings (e.g. social care).

The Internship offers a range of on campus and online teaching sessions combined with the opportunity to undertake a research project or knowledge mobilisation initiative supported by an expert clinical academic supervisor, or to undertake a project related to development of research culture within and across teams. The key components to the internship programme are:

  1. A Planned Research Experience (30 days) supported by supervision and research mentorship where appropriate.
  2. A Learning Package comprising of 2 days face to face learning (Sheffield Hallam University) and 4 half days of online learning.

Funding has been secured to support our next cohort in 2025 and the employers of successful applicants will receive £10,000 for the intern’s backfill and to support research expenses. The employing organisation of the clinical mentors (where required) will receive an additional £1200 to support their costs.

Please find application form here. Full details of the programme and the eligibility criteria can be found at https://www.shu.ac.uk/study-here/options/health-and-social-care/integrated-clinical-academic-programme-internship-scheme
