Very Brief Advice on Smoking, known as VBA, is a life-saving intervention delivered by health and social care practitioners that triggers quit attempts. VBA is recommended by NICE as evidence-based and cost-effective.

The training will equip staff to have a “30 second conversation to save a life”. (NCSCT)

Session Includes:

Increasing understanding that those with an SMI are more likely to smoke and 50% die from smoking related illnesses.

Asking about smoking status, advising about the best way to quit, and acting on the patient’s response. These are the elements of VBA.

How to engage patients who are diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) and have a 30 second conversation to offer support to quit or cut down.

Information on medications and other stop smoking aids available.

Information on how to refer to Yorkshire Smoke Free and other available support.

The session will be delivered by Debbie Hardwick and Sue Blakeley, Senior stop smoking specialists at Yorkshire Smokefree service.
