Diabetes Week

Diabetes Week (8th – 14th June 2026) is a national awareness campaign led by Diabetes UK. The 2026 theme ‘Strike out Stigma’ focuses on challenging blame and judgement associated with diabetes and encouraging supportive conversations.

The campaign will raise awareness of how diabetes affects women differently, promote prevention behaviours, and encourage supportive conversations that reduce stigma and enable people to seek help early.

Prevalence of diabetes amongst Women in South Yorkshire

  • Type 2 diabetes overwhelmingly accounts for the majority of these cases (around 90%)
  • In South Yorkshire, the prevalence among women is estimated to be similar to the national figures – around 7–9% of adult women

Diabetes and Women

  • Women experience diabetes differently to men due to biological and social factors.
  • Hormonal changes across life stages (puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause) can affect blood glucose levels.
  • Women who have gestational diabetes during pregnancy are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
  • Stigma and social pressures can impact women disproportionately, particularly when managing long-term conditions alongside work or caring roles.
  • There are higher risks for some ethnic groups and those with obesity.

Prevention and Self-Care

Key prevention actions include:

  • Eat well: a balanced diet with reduced sugar and processed foods
  • Move more: regular physical activity
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Attending NHS Health Checks (age 40-74)
  • Know your personal risk factors: complete a risk check
  • Seek early support if you are concerned

Evidence shows lifestyle changes such as improved diet, increased physical activity and weight management can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Simple campaign message for prevention:

“Small changes today can reduce your risk tomorrow.”
