Course information

Please note we are only taking expressions of interest at this time and completing registration form does not guarantee you a course place. We will contact you will further information and course dates in due course.

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) requires that all cytology sample takers have undertaken appropriate training in the cervical screening programme and sample taking technique.
The course adheres to the NHSCSP Guidance for the Training of Cervical Sample Takers February 2020 as a minimum.
The course is not intended to be used for three yearly update training for experienced sample takers –
that training is provided separately or available elsewhere

Course content

The training is in two parts – a theoretical course plus a period of mentored practical training.
Theoretical study is delivered as a two-day face-to-face course.
For an overview of the course structure, please see the template course programme
Practical training will take place in the trainee’s place of work and must be supervised by an appropriate
nominated mentor. Trainees must also visit a cytology laboratory and a colposcopy clinic local to their
practice during their training. All training must be completed within a nine-month period, and it is
important that students and their employers do not underestimate the level of commitment this
programme of learning requires.

This CPD course is for Practice Nurses and Allied Health Care Professionals. Please check here if you are eligible for these funded courses.

Please note: By applying for any of these training courses, you/your practice will not be able to also claim your £333 allocated CPD funding.
