Course information

This course is suitable for any Health Care Professional who participates in the screening, diagnosis and clinical management of Hypertension. Often called the “silent killer” hypertension is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for stroke, ischaemic heart disease heart failure, and renal disease. However, according to the World Health Organisation, with early identification, it is one of the most preventable and treatable causes of premature death worldwide.

Course content

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Recognise the impact of hypertension on individuals and society, including its contribution to other co-morbidities and mortality.
  • Explain the normal mechanisms of blood pressure control.
  • Develop increased confidence in the practicalities of accurate blood pressure measurement and the methods used to detect hypertension.
  • Examine the relevant risk factors that contribute to the development of primary hypertension and gain insight into the causes of secondary hypertension.
  • Identify medications that can be used to manage hypertension safely, with reference to current evidence-based national guidelines
  • Identify the key aspects of a hypertension annual review.

Beginning with a back-to-basics approach, the content builds on this foundation to strengthen your understanding of this fundamental health condition. Progressing through five comprehensive sections, it emphasizes the importance of identifying the “missing millions” living with undiagnosed hypertension and teaches you how to accurately diagnose and manage different types of hypertension according to evidence-based guidelines.

A selection of case studies assist application of your learning so that this can be transferred to your everyday clinical practice. This course will count as 7.5 hours of CPD for your revalidation.
