Course information

1 full day training session delivered by Jane Emerson & Heather Jones, Nurse Educators with the SY Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub.
Aim of course: To provide a suitable level of theoretical knowledge & basic practical training to Health Care Support Workers/practitioners to ensure they are able to administer intramuscular injections safely. This training will be delivered by the Nurse Educator team. The training is one full day.
The course covers:
• The immune system & its role in preventing disease
• How vaccines work
• The diseases and vaccines they may be administering (influenza, COVID-19, shingles, pneumococcal, and nasal flu vaccination for children)
• Correct storage & handling of vaccines
• Legal issues, including consent, accountability, patient specific directions
• Recognizing and dealing with adverse events following immunisation (including anaphylaxis)
• Correct administration of IM injection
• Documentation
• Competencies

Once you have completed the training you can download the competencies that you need to complete from the resources provided. These should be completed in practice. Once you are signed off please send this evidence to the training hub who will issue you a certificate. There is no timeframe for this to be completed in.

Course eligibility

This is a fully funded HCA training session for Health Care Assistant’s working in Primary care in South Yorkshire only.

Before applying for this training session, we recommend that you have completed the Care Certificate first.
