Grief is something we will all experience at some stage in our lives, and we never know when bereavement will strike. When it does, it can affect us all in very different, unexpected ways. Navigating it in our workplaces can be a real challenge for both managers and staff, which can lead to feelings of helplessness.
This is the second in a series of Grief Bitesizes which have been designed by expert Helen McMenamin, specifically for The West Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub. The series includes a delivery of an introductory session (2/12/25), then a specialist advice session for managers (24/3/26), and also one for employees (23/6/26).
This Bitesize will equip managers with the skills and knowledge to provide compassionate support to grieving employees in their practice/PCN. It’s run by grief expert and founder of the Flying Fish Company Helen McMenamin, who will give detailed expert advice on:
- Understanding the Impact of Grief in the Workplace: How can grief affect productivity, increase absenteeism, and cause high turnover of staff – and how can we mitigate this?
- Practical Strategies for Support: How can adjustable working hours and flexibility help grieving employees? Plus, useful techniques for initiating and maintaining conversations.
- Implementing Supportive Policies: Do you know which grief policies work best with staff? What are the legal and policy considerations when it comes to grief?
