West Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub are holding a range of free virtual BITESIZE sessions.
This session is available for General Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Allied Health Professionals & any member of staff working with patients who smoke.
Very Brief Advice on Smoking, known as VBA, is a life-saving intervention delivered by health and social care practitioners that triggers quit attempts. VBA is recommended by NICE as evidence-based and cost-effective.
The training will equip staff to have a “30 second conversation to save a life”. (NCSCT)
Session Includes:
- Increasing understanding that those with an SMI are more likely to smoke and 50% die from smoking related illnesses.
- Asking about smoking status, advising about the best way to quit and acting on the patient’s response. These are the elements of VBA.
- How to engage patients who are diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) and have a 30 second conversation to offer support to quit or cut down.
- Information on medications and other stop smoking aids available.
- Information on how to refer to Yorkshire Smoke Free and other available support.
