Advanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship - Training Hub

The Faculty of Advanced Practice are delighted to open the application process for organisations within Yorkshire and Humber to apply for NHS England Clinical Salary Support (CSS) to train Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

In response to the rising demand for the development of Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), NHS England has increased the number of ACP apprenticeship posts supported in primary care. In addition to a clinical salary support grant funded by NHS England and university course fees which are funded by government co-investment through the Levy Reservation, the ACP apprenticeship offers general practices in West Yorkshire additional support for education and training. The North East & Yorkshire Faculty of Advanced Practice provides support for ACP apprentices and their clinical supervisors. Applications from within the West Yorkshire region are facilitated by the Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub in collaboration with local universities and the NEY Faculty of Advanced Practice.

Applications for September 2025 open mid-December 2024.

Upon successful application the Practice/PCN will receive confirmation of £10,200 funding per year (total of £30,600 for the 3-year programme – £30,000 CSS and £600 co-investment).

Who can train to be an ACP in Primary Care? 

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship is open to a wide variety of roles. Examples include:

  • Registered Nurses
  • Paramedics
  • Physiotherapists
  • Podiatrists
  • Dietitians
  • Pharmacists (must not already be undertaking a funded pathway e.g. CPPE)

Advanced Clinical Practitioner Requirements

  • Must have been working clinically for at least 3 years.
  • Must be able to attend university for 1-day per week during term time, plus any other study support days organised by the university/Faculty of Advanced Practice.
  • Must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Must be currently working in a relevant clinical area with access to a suitable clinical supervisor for a minimum of 1-day per week in practice for the duration of the 3-year course.
  • Must not be already undertaking an NHS England funded pathway (e.g. CPPE).
  • Must be able to evidence GCSE qualifications in Maths and English at Grade C/Level 5 (or above), as per apprenticeship rules.
  • Must have an employment contract for at least 30-hours a week as an ACP apprentice, as per apprenticeship rules.

You are advised to read the North East & Yorkshire Faculty Handbook prior to application. This includes details on the new training grant offer for 2024/25, the funding offer, employers’ responsibilities/commitments and how to apply. Please note:

  • For September 2024 intakes, the apprenticeship on-boarding deadlines for universities are in July therefore we recommend any applications for September 2024 starts are submitted as a matter of urgency to avoid missing this application window. Prior to this deadline, you will need to have received NHS England confirmation of the application outcome, ensured that all recruitment processes are completed, and that learners have applied to the relevant university.
  • The North East & Yorkshire Faculty Handbook contains details about the funding offer from NHSE, employers’ responsibilities/commitments and details of how to apply. If after reading the handbook you still have questions, please email england.neyadvancedpractice@nhs.net. Please note the document is a live document and may have updates.
  • Each organisation applying must nominate a single lead contact for the ACP application process. All applications must be approved and submitted by the same lead contact.
  • You will be required to submit an ACP apprentice job description (JD) and person specification (PS) upon applying to ensure your application is considered (applications that are not completed in full or do not provide a JD/PS will be returned).
  • NHSE aim to notify your organisation of the outcome within 4-weeks of submitting your full application.

Once funding is confirmed, ACP candidates must apply for their preferred ACP university course and follow the relevant university application process.

NHS England Levy Transfer Service
NHS England operates an apprenticeship levy transfer service in the North East, Yorkshire & Humber that facilitates the transfer of funds from levy paying employers to non-levy to pay for apprenticeship training in primary care. If your practice plans to employ an apprentice, requesting a levy transfer via this service will mean you do not have to pay the 5% employer co-investment training cost as 100% of the apprenticeship training costs are covered via a levy transfer.
