HCA to Nursing Associate

The Nursing Associate Apprenticeship is a higher-level apprenticeship, offering a 2-year foundation degree at level 5.

It typically consists of:

- 20% academic learning
- 20% placements/insight visits in other settings
- 60% work-based learning in post as a Nursing Associate Apprentice

HCA to Nursing Associate - Funding Support

  • £15,000 Education fees met through either 100% levy transfer or 95% government co-investment, 5% employer costs
  • Employers also currently receive £8,000 training (£4K per year over 2 years) funding paid in instalments to support their NA Apprentice
  • For NA Apprentices employed by PCNs, ARRS funding pays the 2-year salary at Band 3, then Nursing Associate salary post-qualification at Band 4

Nursing Associate (NA) Preceptorship training

The SY Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub offers a 12-month Preceptorship programme for new-to-GP Nursing Associates.

Nursing Associate to Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship Top-Up programme allows Registered Nursing Associates to join the Level 6 RNDA course mid-way through and complete in a shorter time, typically 18 months- 2 years.

It typically consists of:

- 20% academic learning
- 20% placements/insight visits in other settings
- 60% work-based learning in post as a Nurse Apprentice

Nursing Associate to Registered Nurse - Funding Support

  • RNDA Top-Up fees met through either 100% levy transfer or 95% government co-investment, 5% employer costs
  • From October 2022, PCNs can claim reimbursement for Nursing Associates training to become Registered Nurses through the RNDA Top-Up programme. The reimbursable amount is equivalent to a Band 4 salary
