Nursing Associate Preceptorship

The Nursing Associate Primary Care Preceptorship programme is a 12-month scheme delivered by the South Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub for newly qualified and new to general practice Nursing Associates.

These places are for new Nursing Associates who are directly employed by practices within South Yorkshire.

Nursing Associates may be eligible for a training grant to support them to attend the programme.

At the end of the 12-month scheme, NAs have the option to continue for a second year.

The Nursing Associate programme structure

Regular training sessions covering a range of clinical & non-clinical topics such as:

- Introduction to chronic disease management
- Ear care
- Vaccinations & Immunisations
- Anticoagulation
- Health inequalities
- Clinical supervision
- Medicines management

What is the NA Preceptorship Programme?

It is a 12 month programme for newly qualified/new to primary care nursing associates with the option to continue for a second year.

The aim is to provide primary care specific training & preceptorship for new nursing associates to help them to embark on their career in primary care

Who is the programme for?

Newly qualified/new to primary care nursing associates and Nursing Associates working in primary care for less than 6 months.

Who runs the programme?

The programme is run by the South Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub.

The teaching is delivered by the senior nurse educators at the training hub and certain elements (such as ear irrigation) are commissioned externally.

How long is the programme and how often are the sessions?

The programme is 12 months long and consists of regular clinical and non-clinical training sessions (primarily in person).

There is an option to continue for a second year.

What is the commitment from the GP practice?

The practice needs to commit to releasing the NA to attend all the training sessions and will need to provide a preceptor in practice to help implement the training.

Is the programme funded?

The programme is fully funded, there is no charge to the practice.

There is a training grant available for the practice to claim to support the NA to attend the training.
