The West Yorkshire Training Hub recently commissioned research which involved interviews with GPNs from across our West Yorkshire GPN workforce. Key messages from the research concluded that GPNs felt at risk of isolation, that peer support and networking was lacking, and that GPNs would like to better understand career pathway options available to them.

As a result of this research, the WY PCWTH have developed a funded 1-year GPN Fellowship specifically aimed at GPNs who have been in a substantial GPN post for 2 years or more. This Fellowship focuses on providing a safe space where you can reduce isolation, discuss career progression and experiences, and where you can receive much needed peer support. The Fellowship will be delivered via a series of three locality breakfast networking meetings, spread throughout the year.

The locality breakfast meetings are back-filled at £30/hour, attendance is 09:30 – 12:30hrs and will culminate with a West Yorkshire GPN Conference where the locality GPN groups can come together, back-filled at £180. A total of £500 is payable to release the GPN to attend all four of the events.

In addition to the backfill above, there is the opportunity for up to 3 coaching sessions with an experienced Primary Care Nurse throughout the Development Fellowship, worth £225. This will provide a 1-2-1 opportunity to discuss topics of interest in a confidential safe space, providing the time to reflect on personal development needs which will improve the wellbeing and development of the nursing workforce, inline with the Workforce and Wellbeing QOF indicator.

Furthermore, we are also offering 20 funded opportunities to work on a service improvement project within the PCN which mutually benefits the GPNs career, the Practices within the PCN and the patients. Funding will be up to a total of £1440 based on 48 hours at £30/hour. Applications for this element of the Fellowship will need to demonstrate links with the Clinical Director and PCN, and a viable Project Outline with key deliverables to show how the project will be delivered and what impact it will create.
