The Fellowship Programme is designed to ensure there is a place for Fellows to access ongoing support and development as a newly qualified General Practitioner (GP) or General Practice Nurse (GPN) working in primary care or new to General Practice. It is a 2-year rolling Fellowship Programme which provides focused peer support at Locality level whilst also connecting Fellows wider with colleagues across West Yorkshire.

The General Practice Fellowship Guidance Framework has three main themes. The ‘Support and Networking’ aspect provides a thorough induction into the primary care landscape and working and provides peer support whilst embedding into your new career. The ‘Learning and Development’ aspect of the Fellowship is designed to balance ongoing CPD whilst developing the broader skills and knowledge required for a sustainable career working in primary care. The ‘Portfolio Working’ aspect hopes to provide you with opportunities for experience and integrated collaborative systems-level working within your wider Primary Care Networks.

Benefits of Fellowship Participation as a Newly Qualified Doctor or Nurse

The Fellowship Programme aims to ensure there is a place for you to access ongoing support and development as a newly qualified GP or GPN working in Primary Care. It is hoped the Fellowship Programme will support more focused peer support in your local areas but connect you wider with colleagues across West Yorkshire. The ‘Learning and Development’ aspect of the Fellowship is designed to balance ongoing CPD but also the broader skills and knowledge for working in Primary Care. This Fellowship Programme is backed with NHS England funding to help your practice or PCN in realising your time to participate.

Funding Details

The Fellowship is backed with national NHS England funding to enable the Fellow’s funded time to fully participate. Fellows on the Programme will have protected time to participate and will be expected to be part of the different aspects of the Programme. Funding is determined by the Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) of the Fellows. There are two funding options, Option 1 is pro rota attendance, and the funding is determined by the WTE of the fellow and the number of sessions worked per week, including on-costs. Funding option 2 is full-time attendance (4 sessions a month) and is determined by the WTE of the fellow including on-costs. Part time GPs/GPNs can opt for the full-time option.

The Fellowship Programme is available to all newly qualified GPs (qualified within the last 12 months) and GPNs (qualified within the last 24 months) or nurses new to General Practice. See Next Steps for how to apply.
