12/03/2026: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Risks & Management

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a noncurative condition which puts the individual at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In this session we consider how to identify (diagnose) and monitor kidney disease using both the eGFR and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR). We discuss management of the condition in Primary Care and when referral might be necessary.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is increasingly seen in people without acute illness. Alongside, there is now evidence which demonstrates that pre-existing CKD is a major risk factor for the development of AKI. We will look at how to identify AKI, explore the differences between AKI and CKD and discuss the impact of AKI on CKD.
