Resources

Each GP practice should have robust governance in place outlining which legal mechanisms are being used for the supply and administration of vaccines. PSDs, PGDs and national protocols

In practice, our Healthcare assistants make a significant contribution to patient care and utilise general informed ‘consent’ processes for patients for blood pressure checks, ECG etc. However legally under Human medicines regulation Act  (HMR) vaccines are a prescription only medicine, and therefore the consent process together with the clinical assessment must be undertaken by registered healthcare professionals. HCAs have a key role in a delegated capacity to support administration of vaccines.

Important: Updated UKHSA Guidance Regarding the Role of Healthcare Support Workers (such as HCAs) in Vaccination Delivery

We want to make General Practices aware of recent clarification in the updated UKHSA guidance regarding the role of Healthcare Support Workers (such as HCAs) in vaccination delivery. The updated wording suggests that HCAs are not permitted to take informed consent for vaccinations. While UKHSA has confirmed that the underlying policy has not changed, the revised wording is intended to provide greater clarity. However, it is recognised that many practices may have interpreted previous guidance differently, and this clarification could have significant implications for vaccination delivery, particularly in mass vaccination programmes. Concerns have been raised with UKHSA and regional NHSE vaccination teams to communicate with practices about what this means in practical terms. In the meantime, we are sharing updates from Calderdale LMC and Wessex LMC to ensure practices are informed and can plan accordingly:
