Course information

This course is designed for clinicians with an existing knowledge of the diagnosis and management of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where complications, including chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular complications, can cause significant morbidity and mortality. The focus of the course is on recognising how appropriate, evidence-based interventions can both prevent complications and reduce.

Course content

By the end of this course, attendees will have an increased knowledge of:
• The pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetic kidney disease and heart failure
• How to identify those at increased risk
• The evidence-based approach to lifestyle interventions which reduce complication risk
• The pharmacological management of diabetes, focusing on medication which is known to reduce complication risk
• Treating hypertension and dyslipidaemia in people with diabetes
• The use and interpretation of biochemical tests to monitor complications

 

The course is divided into 6 sections with specified learning outcomes for each. The sections are mapped to relevant national and international guidance. The on-line learning materials include a case-study based approach, using narrated power-point sessions, guided learning activities, links to further relevant information and reading, there are knowledge checks at the end of each section. At the end of the course there is a final knowledge check summing up the learning from the course and the ‘Ask the tutor’ facility.
