Course information

Asthma is the most common medical condition in children and young people; it is vital that all healthcare professionals working with this age group appreciate and understand the diagnostic process and appropriate management options for individual children.

This course provides an introduction to asthma in children and young people and will enable healthcare professionals to apply their learning to real world clinical practice. The value of integrated care, and how healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care as well as schools and emergency/ambulatory settings, can work together is explored

Course content

On completion of this course it is expected that the learner will be able to:

• Outline the cautious and structured approach to diagnosis
• Recognise the range of therapeutic management options
• Demonstrate correct use of the range of inhaler devices that children use
• Explain how to support self-management of asthma with different children
• Discuss the management a child having an asthma attack

Using a variety of educational methods to actively engage learners the following topics will be explored:
• Diagnosis of asthma in children
• Non-pharmacological and pharmacological management of asthma
• Effective inhaler technique
• Personalised asthma care for successful self-management
• A guideline-based approach to assessing and managing asthma attacks
