NIHR HCP Internship Programme 2026/2027 (Cohort 2) Applications Open

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the second cohort of the NIHR Health & Care Professional (HCP) Internship Programme 2026/2027 across the North West of England.

Are you a Nurse, Midwife, Allied Health Professional, Pharmacist, Healthcare Scientist, or working in Social Care or Social Work? Do you have the drive and ambition to become a future research leader?

If you’re curious about putting research into practice — or already dipping your toes in — this programme is for you.

About the Programme

NHS R&D North West, in partnership with NHS Trusts, Professional Networks and HEIs, is offering 23 funded places on this prestigious 12-month programme.

Over the course of the internship, you will receive:

  • Up to 30 days of funded research time away from your substantive role

  • A 6-day residential educational programme (3 × 2-day workshops)

  • Academic or research delivery supervision and mentoring

  • Group coaching and personal career development support

  • Opportunity to develop your own research project

  • A celebration event to mark your achievements

  • Up to £10,000 to support educational engagement, training and salary backfill

Eligibility

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  • Not already hold or

    be in the process of studying for a higher research degree (e.g. PhD or Professional Doctorate)

  • Be a registered health or social care professional (excluding doctors and dentists)

  • Have your main employment in the North West of England with an NHS body or eligible provider

Applications are  encouraged from those in less research-active professions and/or organisations, and those in Local Authority health and care roles.
