If you don’t yet have a candidate but plan to recruit, you can register in advance and keep us posted.

  • If you are an interested candidate not yet working in general practice and looking for an employer, vacancies can most often be found on the NHS Jobs website, and any shared with us will also be linked here: [none currently shared]

Is it the same as the Nurse & NA VTS (Vocational Training Scheme)?

If you are familiar with the VTS available previously, it will be similar. Due to national funding ceasing, the VTS has been adapted to fit within the CPD offer.

What’s involved?

Each Nurse/NA taking part can access:

  • Monthly teaching day, covering core topics for new GPNs/NAs
  • Basic clinical skills training
  • Peer-support network and virtual community of practice via MS Teams

Focus: This tailored training programme is ideal to increase recruitment and retention, and support training and development of new to practice staff. The focus of the programme is to improve understanding and confidence in the key components of core General Practice Nursing, as well as provide peer support and a community of practice.

Programme: The programme includes an offer of core clinical skills, as well as a monthly teaching day, covering key topics for those new into the role. Utilising a blended approach, with face-to-face sessions for practical skills, and virtual sessions for topical theory, offers reduced travel for ease of attendance. For virtual sessions, it is essential to have access to a device with a microphone and camera to enable participation and full engagement. The sessions are delivered by a range of professionals and provide opportunities for peer support. Days/times may vary, timetables will be issued in advance to allow rota planning.

The planned timetable can be found here: Information and Timetable

Recognition: There will be certificates provided for attendance of each topic. Clinical skills sessions will include a requirement to complete competencies back in practice prior to certification.

Roots: Following the success of the Nurse & NA Vocational Training Scheme (VTS), as the national funding ended, we were keen to continue a similar programme in response to local demand.

Who is it for?

Eligibility is for ‘New-to-Practice’ General Practice Nurses and Nursing Associates who are either newly qualified or new to General Practice and in their first year (within 12 months of starting in practice). Participants must be employed within a general practice in Humber and North Yorkshire (HNY).

Is it funded?

It is funded for eligible Nurses and NAs (new-to-practice within the last year, employed within general practice in HNY). The teaching and training are free to access as an option within the 2025/26 CPD offer. Unlike the VTS previously, there is unfortunately not a bursary available.
